A taping system that had recorded most of President Nixon’s conversations in the Oval Office provided the “smoking gun” that spoke of crime and corruption. Nixon refused to release the tapes until the Supreme Court ordered him to do so. As the tapes were released, Nixon had apparently hoped that he would be exonerated and that the American public would pass over the explicit, rough, and abusive language he was unfortunately completely incorrect. Nixon’s approval ratings also dropped from 31% to a low 26%. The Nixon tapes shattered the trust of the American people in their government.
